WindTrends

WindTrends is a database of weather conditions spanning the years 1997 to 2009. WindTrends provides a weather snapshot every hour at several heights above ground on a regular grid with points every 20 km; a total of nearly 100,000 data records for each height and point. Included in each record are variables such as wind speed, direction, temperature and pressure, covering Europe and North-America.

Complete hourly data sets are available for every point in Europe. Key applications of these new data include:

  • Allowing wind plant owners to understand how the recent performance of their projects relates to long-term performance.
  • Providing a multi-year “virtual met mast” of hourly wind speed, direction, temperature, and pressure for energy production simulations.
  • Analyzing variability statistics, such as typical variations in monthly or seasonal mean speeds and turbine output, extreme winds, and recent climate trends.
  • Estimating different meteorological variables return periods (such as icing frequencies and associated losses), wind gusts and extreme values.
